Parish News
The “Parish News” has been published for a number of years now. It is intended to provide local news for the entire village.
On average it carries about 16 pages of information, reports and news from the Parish and District Councils, Societies, Clubs and our local Police. Individual concerns are also expressed within these pages by readers. The first few pages are occupied by news from all the churches; including their services and an address from each church leader.
Each issue sports a changing coloured front and back cover, with advertisements interleaved between the newssheets. The advertisements help to keep the cost of the Parish News down and include “small ads” for a variety of services and “for sale” notices. This magazine is a valuable resource and excellent value for money at only 50p per issue or £5.50 for a year’s subscription. Two contacts are:

News-sheet
The Newssheet has run for many years as a way for the Rector, Committees and individual parishioners to tell everyone else any news, information, etc. It is A4 folded to leaflet, A5 size having 4 pages (as is this Information Sheet). It is produced weekly on each Sunday. The make up of the sheet is loosely established as follows:
The front always gives the services for the current Sunday and the following Sunday for both Churches. It includes the normal services and also Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. It gives also the Readings and the Collect for the current Sunday.
Inside (pages 2- 3 and onto page 4) shows the immediate diary for the next 3-4 weeks and any advance notices of meetings, events, etc. including any notes of explanation. Then follows general notices and special messages (of appreciation, etc.)
The back always moves on to concerns of prayer, especially the requests for prayer such as for the bereaved, those preparing for marriage, parents and Godparents of those to be baptised and for friends or family who have special needs, e.g. ill-health. This always closes the newssheet. It is also good to have reports of their progress to print on page 4. When space allows we enjoy sharing someone’s choice of prayer, verse or hymn.
The collection of all news items is via a folder kept on the table at the back of St Martin’s, which is collected from 11 am on each Thursday and typed up by Pat Stone. When completed the copy is returned to the table on Saturday afternoon to be photocopied by Stephen Swann. Copies in large print are also available. When necessary, items can be received by phone on Friday.
Seeround
A few copies of the current issue of Seeround, a monthly newspaper for the Diocese of St Albans, can be found on the news stand in St Martin’s entrance porch and also in St Mary’s. In addition to reports on events and articles of interest, there are details of current and wide-ranging conferences and courses.
We also receive occasional posters or leaflets from St Albans of such initiatives across the diocese and even further afield. Currently we have details of a one-year Christian course to be held at Holy Trinity in Old Stevenage (see table).
Learning Together
Our close neighbours offer courses of half/one day to three-year courses ranging from media, personal growth and skills to more academic religious study. We always receive their booklets and usually have one or more takers. Their year usually starts in the autumn but is being postponed until January 2005 (see table).
